Chris O’Leary’s mixed media paintings run the gamut from bucolic landscapes to stormy seas; from bountiful harvests to escapes on unicorns; and always lots of dogs. He has painted a number of murder mystery covers, creating lovely settings for victims such as pickling shops, artist’s garrets, rocky shorelines, knitting conventions, and South Beach boutiques.
His work has been featured in The Boston Globe, Atlantic Monthly, Vegetarian Times, the L.A. Times, and The Bark magazine. Corporate clients include The Boston Beer Company, Kraft Foods, Massey Ferguson, Barnes & Noble, and The Specialty Food Association. He’s worked with publishers such as Simon & Schuster, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt , Penguin Putnam, Kensington, and Chronicle Books.
In 2013 Chris was selected to appear in Taschen Publishing’s 100 Illustrators. Curated by Steven Heller, the book was an international collection of Taschen’s favorite illustrators from the past 10 years. Chris’ style is described as “A storybook tableaux” featuring “a blend of classic painting with a humorous twist.”
Interests outside of his illustration work includes woodblock printmaking, cooking, biking, sustainable living, and environmental restoration. He worked as the project manager for the restoration of an urban ravine and in the creation of a neighborhood spanning urban arboretum.
He lives in Columbus, Ohio, in a restored bungalow along that same urban ravine, with his wife, Patricia, two daughters, and one scottish terrier.
